Differences between Alnus japonica and A. trabeculosa forests based on their species composition, distribution and habitat properties were investigated in the Niigata Plain and its vicinities, the Japan Sea side of central Ja-pan. The fores … ts were classified into two plant communities : Viburnum sieboldii var. obovatifolium ― Alnus ja-ponica community and Alnus trabeculosa community by the phytosociological method. As a result of comparisons of their habitats and distributional patterns, their plant communities showed a segregative relationship in habi-tat preference. The A. japonica community occurs mainly in alluvial lowlands such as alluvial fan, valley plain, delta, and sand dunes in wide range of the Niigata Plain. On the other hand, the A. trabeculosa community oc-curs mainly on gravel terrace, hills, and valley floor. By the comparison in soil depth of their plant communities, it was found that the A. trabeculosa community occurs mainly in the thin soil habitat, whereas the A. japonica community and the mixed forests occur mainly in the thick soil habitat. The difference in distribution and habi-tat properties of their plant communities were discussed. 続きを見る
