he responsibilities of museum are expanding tolandscapes outside of museum buildings. Kofun, gigantic tumuli built mainly in the westernpart of Japan over a thousand years ago, are the most typical archaeological landscape thatstill exists in contemporary society. This paper attempts to situate the Kofun landscapeinto the contemporary discussion of museology and cultural heritage studies. The authorexamines how the Kofun landscape is preserved under the imperial majesty which has itsroot in an ancient era or was restructured at the beginning of the modern era, presentedto the public underpinned by archaeological knowledge as modern science, and dedicatedby local residents who are engaging in reflexive public history. The imperial Kofunlandscapes are like a very limited-access and cabinet-type museum. The reconstructedKofun landscapes are turned into open-air museums. A small museum attached to Kofunis built as a community hub to maintain the Kofun landscape. Analyzing the relationshipbetween Kofun landscapes and museums is providing a fine example as to how authenticvalues of the landscape have been formed, and future museums face with landscapes.
