概要:
In Meiji 20 (in 1887), KANO Hogai and a few others gathered at the residence of Marquis MAEDA in Hongo, Tokyo, to illustrate the Noh costumes owned by the family. Currently, those illustrations are included in scrolls (5 volumes,
…
hereinafter called Geidai scrolls). In this study, I introduce 50 illustrations, and describe the value of Geidai scrolls as a research material, while comparing the scrolls with similar MAEDA lkutokukai scrolls (9 volumes). I will specifically focus on how the Geidai scrolls not only include designs of the costumes but also the letters written on the wrapping paper used to wrap the costumes, and examine the illustrations for the costumes to determine details about the period in which they were created. The whereabouts of the costumes themselves currently are unknown. I will also present an overview of the knowledge I have gathered thus far with respect to Noh costumes previously owned by the MAEDA family, which reveal details about the period they were created in and will indicate the limitation of this study and scope forfuture research.
